There are
two different types of traffic patterns that we encounter as controllers.
IFR and VFR.
IFR traffic
patterns are pretty much up to us. Meaning, we issue vectors that
we want the pilot to fly. We, as controllers, must always maintain
safe separation of all aircraft within our airspace during times of IFR
weather conditions or a pilot's request for vectoring.
VFR works differently.
Generally, a pilot maintains his own degree of separation and navigation.
As a rule of thumb, VFR traffic patterns shall consist of five legs with
left hand turns. Right hand traffic is at the discretion of the Tower
controller. A good Tower controller will assess his airspace and
make the rational decision regarding right and left-handed traffic for
VFR closed traffic.
